For those of you looking for some fun activties to do this coming weekend, look no further!

On Saturday September 11th the Arboretum will be offering a half day workshop entitled "Monarch Melee" where we will be tagging monarch butterflies as part of an ongoing continent-wide research project. There will be a slide show presentation at the onset and then several hours of net-weilding monarch fun! The day begins at 9:00am and will run until at least 12:00pm (possibly longer!) Bring your nets!

On Sunday September 12th Chris Cloutier will be adding a creepty twist to his nature series with and introduction to the spiders of the Arboretum. This activity entitled "Webs of deceit" will begin at 1:00pm and will run until about 3:00pm. Bring nets, critter keepers and your curiosity!

Hope to see you there!

For those of you interested in coming to witness the Perseid Meteor Shower on August 12, please be aware that in the event of rain, the event will be hosted on the 13th of August. Both will begin at 8:00 sharp in any event.

From someone who has witnessed this spectacular light show before, I must invite everyone out to see this event unfold...if the skies are clear, it is something that you will truly remember for a long time to come!

Remember to bring beach chairs if you like, spotting scopes or telescopes!

RASC will be hosting a short presentation before heading outside, and they will have telescopes on hand for visitors to use!

See you there!

It's that time of year again ... come to the arboretum on Saturday 8 May between 9am and 3pm and volunteer with others to help tidy the forest for the spring and summer ahead.

Call the office in advance if you can to see what jobs need doing and what tools you should bring.

This is always a very enjoyable day - don't miss it.

Have you noticed the nature journal that is being kept by the arboretum's naturalists?  There is a big green button on the home page of our website that will take you to it.  On this journal you can keep up with all the happenings in the life of the forest - trees, flowers, birds and butterflies.

The latest entry (2 May) for example tells us that:

As you anter the Arboretum stop by the tall rader dome and look under the platform at the top.  There about 30 Cliff Swallow nests visible (and as many more on the far side) and if the mosquitoes are about you will see the adults wheeling in the air catching them.  Across the road is an old dome-shaped barn where you can see Barn Swallows (what else) flying around and entering the barn.  Both these swallows have a reddish colouration on the neck and chest but the Cliff Swallows have a square tail while the Barn Swallows have a forked one making them easy to distinguish,

Red-winged Blackbirds are staking out territory on the filed south of Pullions Pasture along with three or four pairs of Song Sparrows.  A Brown Thrasher was seen in the trees to the east of the field as well as a pair of Northern Flickers.

The first Warblers have also been seen – a Yellow-rumped to be specific.
